However, there’s more than scenic beauty. A positive business environment and a growing economy ensure
that Moss Point is poised for continued growth. The city’s ambition is to become the most business friendly city on the Coast and it is revising its zoning, codes and ordinances to achieve that goal.
“The city recognizes that implementing programs, policies and investment in quality of life amenities such as parks and recreation, art and culture, and bike and pedestrian paths not only demonstrates a commitment to the local community but strongly communicates assurance of our long-term dedication to making Moss Point a connected, inclusive community and home for new companies and their employees,” said Moss Point Economic Development Director Sue Wright.
The Estabrook family, who’ve been in the automobile business in Jackson County since 1951, believes in the viability of Moss Point. They opened Estabrook Automotive at the Highway 63 exit of Interstate 10 a year ago.
“Moss Point has a valuable location at the intersection
of Interstate 10, Highway 63 and Highway 613, which are primary access points to the regional employers here,” Drew Estabrook said. “The amount of traffic at our location is amazing. It not only makes us more convenient to our customers all over Jackson and George counties, but we now get access to customers from all over the region.”
Estabrook says the city’s proximity to rivers and the Gulf of Mexico are important. “Being on the Coast provides such tremendous economic and recreational assets that I believe it’s a driver in quality of life here,” he said.
Another key transportation factor is the Mississippi
Export Railroad (MSE), a short line railroad that was incorporated in 1922. MSE’s main office is located in downtown Moss Point. MSE works with the Jackson County Economic Development Foundation, city of Moss Point and surrounding cities to promote industrial sites. MSE services local industries in different capacities. “Personal service is the railroad’s basic philosophy,” said MSE President Greg Luce.
Mississippi Export Railroad is a 42-mile short line railroad extending from Evanston to Pascagoula. It is the north- south corridor connecting the Canadian National Railroad (CN) and the east-west line of CSX Transportation (CSXT). MSE also connects with the Norfolk Southern (NS) in Mobile and Hattiesburg, and Kansas City Southern (KCS) in Jackson through haulage agreements. These connections and their alliances link the Gulf of Mexico to all points on the continent.
The Pascagoula River Audubon Center celebrates the area’s natural beauty and adds to the quality of life. The center has a lot to offer and will have more when the new facility opens October 15 on Arthur Street. Native plants >>
