Boys & Girls Clubs of the Gulf Coast (BGCGC) is currently enrolling for its Summer Brain Gain summer camps, which aim to combat summer learning loss.
According to the Boys & Girls Clubs, numerous studies show that most students lose about two months of grade-level equivalency in reading and mathematical computation skills over just the course of summer break. This is where Summer Brain Gain comes into play.
“Summer camp is fun and full of activities, but we also want to ensure that students do not lose any academic ground while they’re out of school,” said CEO Keva Scott.
For just $255 for an eight-week camp, BGCGC offers engaging and educational experiences that foster and encourage academic achievement. Included in the cost are two meals and a snack each day and a $30 field trip fee.
Along with Summer Brain Gain programs, campers will participate in a number of activities including intramural sports, music production, field trips and more. BGCGC is open from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

A popular event is celebrating 10 years with the
May 10 Taste of Ocean Springs Food & Wine Festival. Always a sellout, the festival takes place in the L&N Depot Plaza from 6-8:30 p.m. and is hosted by the Ocean Springs Chamber of Commerce – Main Street – Tourism Bureau. Tickets are not available at the event.
“Taste is the feature event in a month long celebration of the culinary flavors of Ocean Springs during May, coined as food month,” says Chamber Executive Director Cynthia Sutton. “The month-long festivities include Free Food Fridays, a social media campaign
to give away gift certificates for local restaurants each Friday in May, the feature event, and is followed by Ocean Springs Restaurant Week where local restaurants will have specials May 13-19.”
Sutton adds that festival attendees will experience the best of local dining with the 10th Annual Taste as it showcases samples from the restaurants and bars of Ocean Springs to ticketed guests. Live music will be provided by Caution Swing Bridge.
