representations of birds.“In the realm of all things symbolic, birds and feathers have held a certain fascination for me,” he said,“My earliest drawings as a toddler were of birds and flying. Indeed, I drew every kind of bird imaginable. I consumed the works of Audubon and other notable ornithologists both past and present.”
Lorenz is inspired by birds as a symbol of freedom and liberation.“Feathers have a long and illustrious history, beginning with the earliest of civilizations,” Lorenz continued. “In Egypt for example, the feather represented the word truth.” Lorenz is well-known for his series ‘U-BIRDZ,’ which features whimsical bird-like characters.

ZAPP® ONLINE SYSTEM BRINGS NEW ARTISTS TO FESTIVAL
This year for the second time, an online artist directory was used to help with the process of securing talented, juried vendors for the Peter Anderson Arts & Crafts Festival. ZAPP® enables individual artists to apply online to multiple art shows through one central website, ZAPPlication.org. The online application process also allows artists to directly upload digital images of their artwork for jury review. The result is that all artwork in the system is in a consistent, high-quality, digital format. The digital images are presented to
the jurors of each show and the system allows them to score online.
In 2001, the Western States Arts Federation (WESTAF) convened several meetings with representatives of the National Association of Independent Artists (NAIA) and several major
art shows to discuss the feasibility
of developing a web-based system
that would enable artists to apply to
art fairs, festivals and shows online.
In March 2004, WESTAF began the development of an online application system, for the U.S. The system was branded as ZAPP®, the universal online arts application. The site allows festival exposure to 70,000 artists from around the United States.
