onions for dipping, making each bite a real treat for the tastebuds.
Lipe strives for all his dishes to be this flavorful, saying one of the worst things is his seeing someone grab for the salt and pepper after tasting their food. But given the dishes we enjoyed, Lipe can’t possibly see that happen often.
We were fortunate to also try one of the upcoming weekly specials: butternut squash, coconut milk and shrimp curry. The yellow curry featured green chickpeas and roasted carrot chunks, adding another depth of flavor to the bisque. The curry, topped with seared fresh Gulf shrimp, was
served with toasted naan — definitely a dish that deserves the name “special.” The weekly specials come with the choice of side salad, soup of the day or the seafood gumbo.
And while the specials provide something new to savor each week, the menu is filled with selections featuring something for everyone. The soup of the day when we were there was the amazing crawfish boil chowder, something we couldn’t resist. This chowder was loaded with crawfish, potatoes and corn, everything one would find at a local boil. The broth had such a satisfying kick to it, and it came with a mini loaf of Gambino’s French bread, perfectly crusty
on the outside and soft in the middle, ideal for sopping up the last bits.
The seafood gumbo, with a serving of rice in the middle, was also delightful. Lipe said it was a New Orleans-style gumbo with tomatoes, sausage, shrimp, crawfish and okra, one of the more popular items in the restaurant. The chef added he gets all his seafood and vegetables from local businesses, which helps account for the fresh taste. All the soups, sauces and dressing are house-made, as well.
Hot sandwiches include the Reuben, Cajun French dip, and ham and cheese made with house-made pimento cheese. The muffuletta, a classic New Orleans sandwich and another Dockside favorite, features ham, salami, mortadella, Swiss cheese and olive salad served on Gambino’s sesame seed bread. Just one more instance where the flavor shines through with the layers upon layers of taste.
