Dwight Yoakam, born October
23, 1956, in Pikeville, Kentucky,
and raised in Ohio, is a pioneering
country singer-songwriter renowned
for revitalizing traditional honky-
tonk and the Bakersfield sound.
Blending neotraditional country,
rock influences, and alternative
edges, he emerged in the mid-1980s
as a defiant counterpoint to slicker
country trends, earning praise from
both country and rock critics.
His 1986 debut album Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc. launched
him with hits like the Johnny Horton cover “Honky Tonk
Man” (No. 3) and the original “Guitars, Cadillacs” (No. 4).
Follow-ups Hillbilly Deluxe (1987) delivered four Top 10
singles, while 1988’s Buenas Noches from a Lonely Room

plus “I Sang Dixie.” His commercial

million records, charted over 30
singles, scored multiple No. 1 albums,
