BLUE BAYOU
story and photos by Lori Beth Susman
Nestled in a corner at Silver Slipper Casino Hotel is a restaurant that welcomes guests with delicious dining, amazing views of the Gulf Coast and an upscale, yet comfortable, ambiance. It’s the Blue Bayou Bar & Grill, where regulars have been going for years and newcomers find themselves hooked from the very first bite.
The popular restaurant now has a new chef and a new menu giving diners even more to enjoy. Chef d’cuisine David Gooch has revamped the offerings, which include pasta, seafood and steaks, along with a selection of appetizers, oysters and specialty soups.
We started the meal with two of the new appetizers, Barq’s Root Beer-glazed pork belly and the fried green tomato ravigote. The pork belly was a hit with
the pickled watermelon and vanilla bourbon creme anglaise combining to give the dish a sweet-and-salty root beer float taste. And the three green tomatoes were lightly fried, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, topped with lump crab, capers, horseradish and a Creole aioli.
Oysters served on the half shell and prepared chargrilled and Rockefeller style are on the menu, and Blue Bayou nightly serves its seafood gumbo, available in two sizes. We opted for
a cup of the soup du jour, a crawfish bisque loaded with crawfish and shrimp in a light, creamy broth. The soup went perfectly with slices of the warm French bread and olive loaf we received while we first perused the menu.
