donations by volunteers and residents.
After a temporary closure for improvements and a
reorganization, the museum is set to reopen on the 10th
anniversary of Katrina featuring eight paintings
from Vicksburg artist H.C. Porter’s “Backyards and
Beyond: Mississippians and Their Stories,” a
traveling collection of artwork and audio
interviews. Porter documented Coast residents recovering and
rebuilding in the face of tremendous loss and hardships following Katrina. The exhibit is sponsored by
Mississippi Power Company.
Plans for the museum include showing the broader history
of Waveland beyond the 2005 hurricane. New exhibits will feature local establishments and traditions such as the Krewe of Nereids, the all-female Carnival group that was formed in Waveland in the 1960s, and the Waveland Civic Association.
A carousel donated by Washington State volunteers will be permanently installed in a building adjacent to the museum in the near future.
The Waveland Ground Zero Hurricane Museum is a fund of the Hancock Community Development Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation managed by the Hancock County Chamber of Commerce. The Waveland Civic Center is owned and the museum will be operated by the City of Waveland, according to Mayor Mike Smith.
The museum will be temporarily closed in September for further renovations. Call for hours of operation.
