O, the South, the South,
We are always ready to run our mouth. We got big ol trucks,
And shoot big bucks.

“Southern Coast” by Sean Sinclair, grade 9
The coast is a whirlwind of sand, salt, and concrete.
The wind blows harshly against the sidewalk, sprinkled with footprints.
All we see on the horizon is a restaurant that only cooks seafood.
“Where I Live” by Tratyn Gibson, grade 11
Sunshine in the morning,
As waves crash along the shore. Gulls call in the clouds above, While fish shimmer below.
The air smells of salt, Soft sand parts for travel As the day goes on.
Streets are filled with tourists, Hoping to catch a small fortune, Casinos occupy their time.
People complain but there is nothing to gain. This place is my home, I love it so.
Where I live is the Gulf Coast.
“Talk is Just Like Sidewalk Chalk” by Rachel Weaver, grade 10
Talk is just like sidewalk chalk,
It is washed off with the rain.
It pours, it storms, and once again, The sidewalk never changed.
A blur of colors left, no matter, What was there before?
Simply hints of rainbow light, And nothing, nothing more.
“Mississippi” by Tyler Couch, grade 11
From the great town of Tupelo
To the Barrier Islands down below To the great casinos on the Coast Oh Mississippi makes me boast.
When the oil spill came And the hurricanes blew The people came together And pulled right through.
The Magnolia State,
Oh isn’t it great?
Both the crawfish
And the country fried steak.
The people here are just so grand They’re the reason why I love this land. If you don’t like it, well bless your heart, Oh Mississippi, where do I start?
