Reflections of the
Gulf Coast
On the cover of South Mississippi Living magazine you’ll see the phrase “Reflections of the Gulf Coast,” which is the vision of our publication. We take pride in telling the stories of the Gulf Coast, but have entrusted some of the students at West Harrison High School with that privilege. We hope you’ll enjoy seeing South Mississippi from their perspective through this collection of poems.

“Mississippi” by Jared Coggins, grade 11
The state where I live and learn, The home I am a part.
Beaches and coast upon every turn, Is closest to my heart.
The beach with sand and sea so blue, The isles with the docks.
Summer seems so far, so true,
The water with the rocks.
“Friends on the Coast” by Breanna Allen, grade 10
I feel I should boast
About my friends on the coast. Bathing suits and ponytails, Our crazy friendship never fails.
Singing and dancing like we’re in a band With our feet buried in the sand.
Beach parties and bonfires,
Our ceaseless laughter never tires.
“Beach” by Jayden Ivy, grade 9
There is a beach, that place that makes a very precious sound.
When it gets mad, the windy storms destroy. When it is happy, the rising water fills the ocean.
“The Gulf” by Jadyn Carillo, grade 9
Flashing lights of casino’s brighten your eyes. Wondering what the weather will be as the sky tells lies.
The sand on the beach covers your toes.
The Gulf has numerous highs but never lows.
