KIDS future foodies
story by Julian Brunt photos by Donn Hupp
Some of my fondest memories are of cooking with my mom. There is no other room in the house that can take the kitchen’s
place, with pots simmering, ovens baking, and secrets being shared. The kitchen is the very heart of a home where families
come together and share, not only sustenance and love, but the act of cooking can be a family affair as well.
I have a recipe for chow-chow (you might know it as tomato chutney) that has been in my family for generations. My mother taught it to me when I was a kid, and I make it to this day. When this spicy condiment is simmering in my kitchen, generations of family seem to be there with me, and you can be sure I taught it to my daughter.
Yes, times change, and many busy moms are holding down full-time jobs now. But bringing the kids into the kitchen and cooking with them
will pay back in dividends that can’t be measured in time or coins. Here are a few interesting and simple suggestions to help you get your family together in the kitchen.
The simplest way to involve the kids is to schedule time once a week, or even once a month, when everyone can come together in the kitchen. Plan a simple meal that all can participate in making, and at the end can sit together and enjoy the fruits of your labors.
