Spiders Golf Tournament Helps Local Families
story by Lynn Lofton
When the Spiders Golf Tournament takes place April 14 at Sunkist County Club, someone in the community will benefit. This tournament’s board of directors chooses someone each year to receive funds collected from participants.
This year’s recipient is eight-year-old Lily McCabe, daughter of Zack and Ashley McCabe of Gulfport. Lily is undergoing chemo therapy and radiation for a brain tumor.
“We have three traditions with this tournament,” chairman Rusty Ramage explained. “The first is that the recipient comes to the opening where we pass a box around. It’s typical to collect $1,200 in three minutes. Everyone is generous and gracious because they understand what it’s for.”
Other traditions include having memory box signs for teammates and parents who’ve died during the year, and that the Gulfport High School Robotics students provide food for the golfers.
There are 36 teams playing in this year’s tournament. Ramage says they don’t need more golfers, but they do need corporate sponsors to underwrite green fees.
The tournament honors the memory of Robert ‘Slim’ Mount, owner of the former Spiders Restaurant. Since 1977, the tournament has raised $420,000 for local families.

Boogie Night, the annual fundraiser for the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center, has a 1980s theme.
It’s always a fun event and this year was no exception. Attendees enjoyed dressing in ‘80s styles, tasty food, a stellar silent auction and a few local residents disguised as ‘80s boogie stars.
Four South Mississippi Living staff members were joined by three friends to sing and dance to the song “It’s Raining Men” made famous in 1982 by the Weather Girls. Our own Weather Girls included Lynn Lofton, Suzette Carlson, Kelsey Sunderman-Foster, Shirley LeRoy and Tish Hancock. The men who ‘rained down’ were Patrick Morris and Jason Shurtz.
