plants to the center of the plate, where they become the focal point of a delicious and modern meal.
Lunch at Makin’ Groceries is a treat for the eyes and the tastebuds. Chef Christy’s dishes
are colorful, vibrant and packed with flavor.
The Hummus Plate is a great way to start. The hummus is seasonal and changes according to available ingredients. The truffle pesto hummus is amazing and is served alongside house-pickled vegetables and spiced nuts.
If you want something slightly heavier, go for the Gehry Tower, named for the museum’s architect, Frank Gehry. Green tomatoes are dredged in Italian seasoning and lightly air-fried, while shredded heart of palm is mixed with breadcrumbs and spices, forming the most delicate veggie
cake. Both are stacked together and served atop a medley of microgreens and vegan remoulade.
The Cauliflower Nuggets are another appetizer to try. Gluten-free flour and panko breadcrumbs hug delicate pieces of cauliflower served with in- house chipotle aioli and vegan ranch. For a main course, Chef Christy’s Veggie Club and Jackfruit Tacos are amazing examples of plant-based meals done right. The Veggie Club is layered with pesto hummus, fried eggplant, mozzarella, roasted bell peppers, grilled squash and microgreens and is
a totally epic sandwich. Still, the Jackfruit Tacos are the winning dish. Pulled jackfruit slathered in barbecue sauce and topped with slaw and cilantro is the plant-based equivalent to pulled pork, and bares such a resemblance to the real thing that I’m still not convinced I wasn’t at a backyard barbecue.
Chef Christy incorporates her love of plant- based cooking at the café, but also at home, where she encourages her family to eat healthy and loves to include her twins, Blaine and Brody, throughout the cooking process. “My mom works really hard at what she does,” offers Blaine, who loves mixing up sauces with his brother.
Makin’ Groceries prides itself on embracing
the beauty of all things plants, while sourcing everything locally and bringing meals to the public in a delicious and affordable way. Open for lunch Tuesday through Friday and brunch on Saturday, Makin’ Groceries is making up something really special and will definitely leave you loving the plant-based items on your plate.
