I t’s been a year since general surgeon Matthew “Scott” Brashier made the Mississippi Gulf Coast his home, and for the Magnolia state native, it’s been full of opportunity and new experiences.
Having grown up around Meridian, Dr. Brashier attended Ole Miss, followed by medical school in Kentucky. After graduating from medical school, he moved to Michigan to complete his residency and internship. Immediately before coming to
the Gulf Coast, he practiced general surgery in the small Mississippi towns of Newton and Forest.
“It’s good to move around and get a different perspective,” he said, “but I wish I would have moved here sooner,” he added, with affection for his new home.
As a child, Dr. Brashier watched episodes of the long-running, popular television series, “M*A*S*H,” and knew he wanted to become a surgeon. His Bachelor’s degree in pharmaceutical science
prepared him for medical school and his future career.
Growing up and later practicing medicine in rural Mississippi, he had many different interests and hobbies to keep him busy. From cattle farming to woodworking, welding and building saltwater aquariums, his interests are just as different as the surgeries he performs. “Every case is different,” he said. “No two surgeries are the same – each has a new set of challenges.”
