12 SOUTH MISSISSIPPI Living • December 2016
The big news is that we’re having a birthday. It’s hard to believe, but South Mississippi Living (SML) is ten years old as reflected on this month’s cover. Many residents have sent their comments and congratulations
to help us celebrate. Ten years ago, a monthly lifestyle magazine to tell the area’s stories in
words, photos, ads
and graphics was
exactly what the Coast
needed in the dark days
following Hurricane
Katrina. The publication
was a force for bringing
us together with
hope and optimism.
Everywhere I go — and
other staff members
say the same thing —
people say they enjoy
our efforts each month.
We sincerely hope all of
you will continue to do
so. We always welcome
your thoughts and
suggestions.
Speaking of milestones, this month also marks the conclusion of five years for me as editor — half of SML’s lifespan. It’s been a fast-moving adventure! You can’t believe how swiftly the months fly until you work on a monthly magazine. It’s been a privilege and joy to meet so many people and help tell their stories.
This month we feature a Christmas home that’s just about the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. It has a Dr. Seuss theme with lots of green Grinches and other colorful characters. Check it out.
The real meat of this edition is the Giving Guide with a list of non-profit organizations on pages 84-92. For the third year, thanks to generous sponsors, we present the list with addresses, websites, phone numbers and contact names. That makes it easy to make contributions or become
a volunteer. There are also feature stories about numerous organizations that were chosen for spotlighting by the sponsors.
In keeping with the theme of giving, this month’s Dining section salutes some of the Coast’s soup kitchens and the good work they do. These chefs share recipes, but fair warning, the quantities may be a little daunting.
However, there are recipes for football bowl parties in the Sports & Outdoors section that may be easier to prepare at home.
