CAPTAIN AL’S
story and photos by Julian Brunt
Captain Al’s started out as a place where you could get a really good steak, really good shrimp, or a combination of the two, but little else. That was 24 years ago and the menu has changed substantially; today it’s loaded with good things from the sea and land.
In fact, the busiest day at Captain Al’s is Thursday when they offer their amazing pork chop lunch special. You get two pork chops, fried or grilled, homemade mashed potatoes with gravy, fried okra, and English peas and it will set you back just $9.99. You won’t find another deal like that in town.
There is a lunch special Monday through Friday that is heavy on local tradition. Monday is, of course, red beans and rice (just $8.99), Tuesday is a hamburger steak, and Wednesday is shrimp spaghetti, a local favorite for countless years. Friday is catfish day with generous sides of baked beans, French fries and hushpuppies.
This is a seafood and steak place and it would be hard to say if one is more popular than the other, at least based on an hour-long visit and careful observation. But it wouldn’t surprise me if the steak edged the seafood out, by just a smidgeon. All the steaks are cooked over a pecan wood fire that you can smell as soon as you walk in the door. Captain Al’s makes it easy to make up your mind with several combinations of steak and seafood. The Captain’s Special Steak and Shrimp just might be the best seller overall. It is a 10- or 12-ounce ribeye, fried or grilled shrimp and a side. You have several choices for the side, but the stuffed melted-cheese covered potato looked amazing.
