Thanksgiving Blessings
Vintage Biloxi home blends antiques with contemporary touches
story by Lynn Lofton photos by Katherine Sowers
When Jennifer Boles lists her Thanksgiving blessings, she will undoubtedly put her vintage home high on the list. She inherited the Biloxi home, built in the early 1900s, from her late aunt, Miriam Scarborough.
Boles feels a connection not only to her aunt, but also to her late grandfather, Dr. George Wallace, who bought the house for Scarborough. “I never met my grandfather, but I feel like I have a part of him here,” she said.
As the new owner of the 2,700-square-foot home, Boles did a complete renovation. “I took it down to the bones, added central air and heat and a second floor in the attic space, and removed asbestos tile to reveal the original pine floors,” she said.
She also took down the dropped ceilings and installed tray ceilings in the living room and dining room. The ceilings’ architectural details are highlighted with contrasting paint colors.
Describing her decorating style as French eclectic, Boles said, “I like to tie in vintage and antique pieces I inherited with contemporary touches.”
The living room embraces that style beautifully with gray walls that have a subtle hint of lavender. There are matching white sofas and two charcoal leather chairs for comfortable seating. Large carved antique doors are propped against the wall as art. The decorative touches include white pillows, flowers and photos in silver and gold frames. >>
