The new year is a time for re ection, growth, and change. Many of us set new resolutions in January to plan
smarter spending habits, live a healthier lifestyle or learn a new skill. Unless
you have knowledge and awareness of the changes you need to make, action
is impossible. For example, you can’t improve your spending without making a budget and knowing where you are spending too much money.
Just like you are making personal resolutions, the Gulf of Mexico Alliance has set a resolution to share ways we can continue to Embrace the Gulf through action in 2021. Last year, we launched the “Embrace the Gulf” campaign, a year-long education and awareness e ort highlighting the vitality, sustainability, beauty, and productivity of the Gulf of Mexico. Knowing the best way to reach a broad audience across the ve Gulf
states would be to use the power of social media, the Alliance shared daily messages across Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
The most popular daily facts focused on the Gulf of Mexico’s wildlife, habitats, and ways the environment bene ts people. Did you know:
• Oyster reefs help prevent erosion by reducing wave energy, boat wakes, and storm surge
• The Pascagoula River is the largest undammed river in the lower 48 states
• Half of the nation’s salt marshes are located along the Gulf Coast
• Whales, including orcas and the endangered Bryde’s whale, live throughout the Gulf
Sharing these facts throughout 2020 built the foundation that makes action possible. Now, we are calling on you to take the passion you’ve developed learning about the wonders of the
Gulf and turn it into action. Throughout the year, we’ll be sharing ways you can volunteer in the community, protect wildlife, and get outside. Embrace the Gulf with your time, your talent, your resources and gifts.
