The serene waters of Coastal Mississippi beckon visitors year-round, offering abundant recreational opportunities. The Coast is a playground for boaters seeking adventure and relaxation, from fishing expeditions to leisurely cruises. However, amidst the allure of the open sea lies a responsibility, not just to ensure personal safety but also to safeguard the fragile marine ecosystem that thrives beneath the surface. As stewards of these waters, boaters must observe proper etiquette and respect the wildlife that make this region home.
One of the most exhilarating experiences for boaters in Coastal Mississippi is encountering dolphins frolicking in their natural habitat. These sentinel mammals are a symbol of the ocean’s vitality and charm. Yet, it’s crucial to approach them with caution and respect. According to the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (MDMR), boaters should adhere to federal guidelines that recommend staying at least 50 yards away from dolphins. While getting closer for a better view or a perfect photo opportunity may be tempting, intrusive behavior can disrupt their natural behaviors and cause unnecessary stress. By maintaining a safe distance, boaters can enjoy observing dolphins without compromising their well- being.

The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies (IMMS) provides valuable guidance on how to assist these animals while minimizing harm. If you encounter a stranded marine mammal or sea turtle, you must maintain a safe distance and contact IMMS Marine Mammal Stranding Network immediately. Attempting to intervene without proper training can result in further injury to the animal and pose risks to your safety. By promptly reporting stranded marine life, you contribute to conservation efforts and provide injured animals with the best chance of survival.
Beyond marine life encounters, responsible boating includes adhering to general rules that promote environmental stewardship and safety. Littering tarnishes the Coast’s natural beauty and poses severe threats to marine ecosystems. Plastic pollution, in particular, has become a pervasive issue, endangering aquatic life through ingestion and entanglement. Boaters must pledge to dispose of trash properly and refrain from
