Story by Victoria Snyder
As you make your way along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, you’ve likely noticed State Historical Markers. Maybe near buildings, schools, cemeteries, churches, and even at the beach. They give insight into our past and can teach both locals and tourists alike about our history. Often these markers are predominantly green. But have you ever noticed other colors? Like blue, or red, or black?
Some of these different colors signify Mississippi History Trails. For example, you may notice markers for the Mississippi Freedom Trail, Mississippi Country Music Trail, and Mississippi Blues Trail on the Coast. These trails can be enjoyed by avid music fans, history buffs, or people just looking to learn more.

MISSISSIPPI FREEDOM TRAIL
This trail was created in 2011 to honor the people and places that played a role in the American Civil Rights Movement. The first markers were revealed at the Mississippi Freedom 50th Foundation’s 2011 reunion. Now, there are over 20 sites. In 2022, Visit Mississippi and the Mississippi Humanities Council began working together to expand and maintain the trail. Since they began working together, they are on pace to double the number of markers initially on the trail by the end of the year.
You can visit visitmississippi.org/things-to-do/freedom- trail for a comprehensive list of every trail marker and their location.
