Cake will be art at 2015 Jackson County Heart Gala

DOROTHY SHAW, manager of community relations at Ingalls Shipbuilding, will be a special guest at this year’s Heart Gala.
All art and cake lovers are invited to this year’s Jackson County Heart Gala where cake as art will be the focus of the evening. It’s called Icing on the Cake and takes place September 17 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Pelican Landing in Moss Point.
“The Jackson County Heart Gala is always about art,” said Marlo Tipton, regional director for the American Heart Association. “This year we wanted to shake things up a bit and do something fun, so we’re looking at cake as art.”
The highlight of the evening will be a cake decorating contest with celebrity judges Mauro Castano from The Learning Channel’s The Cake Boss and Mississippi’s own Whitney Miller who was season one winner of The Master Chef.
Additionally, cakes from local bakers and bakeries will be up for bid. But these cakes will have some unusual ingredients added to their recipes — vegetables from the Heart Association’s teaching garden. There will be silent and live auctions and guests will be able to vote on their favorite cakes. The three cakes receiving the highest votes will participate in the live decorating contest.
Dorothy Shaw will be a special guest as this year’s Heart Association honoree. The manager of community relations at Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Ingalls Shipbuilding Division in Pascagoula, Shaw is active in community and Heart Association activities.
Heather and Alan Sudduth are chairing Icing on the Cake and invite everyone to support this event. “It’s going to be a great evening and it’s always good to support the programs and research of the American Heart Association,” Alan Sudduth said. “The dress is business casual and we’re looking for a big crowd.”
