SICILIAN II
story and photos by Julian Brunt
It isn’t often that a new restaurant comes to town and proves to be a game changer, but after at least a dozen visits to Sicilian II in Biloxi, I’ve got to say, this place is crazy good.
It’s Italian, so what’s so great about it? Sicilian II has pizza, so what? They have a nice assortment of traditional Italian and Mediterranean dishes, doesn’t everybody else? The sauce
is home made. Really? The Italian sausage is homemade too. Oh? Now that’s different. The ricotta cheese is homemade as well. Now, that’s really different!
In fact, when you order a pizza at Sicilian II, Chef Hristo Drakopoulos or his son, Chris, takes a pre-measured piece of dough that they made that
morning, tosses it in flour, and starts forming your pizza crust, all by hand. The sauce that is simmering on the
stove in not only homemade, it is really, really good! All the ingredients are fresh, and the resulting pizza is just one of the best I have ever had, hands down.
How do they do it? It’s a matter of passion and heart. Chef Hristo arrives early in the morning and there is absolutely nothing else he had rather be doing. He is a Greek, a fact he is only too glad to let you know, but his Sicilian roots go back generations,
and his recipes go back just as far. He lovingly makes the dough, simmers the sauces, tastes and seasons just right. No short cuts are taken. This is how it is supposed to be done. Ask him for
