FROM THE editor’s desk
It’s May 18 when we’re going to press, and everyone on the Coast is looking ahead toward brighter days.
Last week it was announced that the casinos would be reopening, each taking measures to keep guests safe. The
week before, restaurants started opening their doors, offering limited seating, disposable menus, and serving customers safely following CDC guidelines.
Like many, my first dine-in experience at a restaurant following stay-at-home orders was a cathartic one. I visited Harbor View Cafe in Long Beach with my mother and we enjoyed our first taste of the new normal. It was a different experience than the last time we ate out, but a glorious one nonetheless. I’m not sure I’ll ever enjoy a glass of sweet tea as much as I enjoyed that first one out of quarantine!
The days ahead will be challenging. They will look different, they will feel different. But despite the strangeness of it all, there are still glimpses of normalcy all around us. Behind her mask, our waitress still greeted us with kind eyes. Walking down Government Street the following weekend, people waved and said hello to friends, neighbors and strangers, just as usual.
Yes, the new normal is different, but we as a community are still ourselves at heart. It’s a little stressful and a bit weird, but there’s no one I would rather do this new normal with than the people of South Mississippi. With hope, and a concerted effort to persevere, we will make it through to that brighter day – one with promises of recovery and fresh glasses of sweet tea.
