River 38: The Signature Coffee of Ingalls Shipbuilding
story by Kelsey Sunderman-Foster photo courtesy of Ingalls Shipbuilding
In celebration of its 80 year anniversary, Ingalls Shipbuilding unveiled its very own signature coffee. The coffee, known as River 38, comes in a breakfast blend and dark roast and was curated by Delores Nettles, owner of DeLo’s Heavenly House of Coffee in Gautier.
“We started with four different blends, which we presented to Ingalls management to try,” said Nettles. “We selected the dark
roast that day, but perfected the breakfast blend after going through a few more samples.”
When Joey Smith, electrical
test foreman, suggested a name for the coffee, he thought of the company’s connection to the life- giving Pascagoula River and 1938, the year Ingalls was founded. “This place wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the river,” Smith said.
“River 38 engages Ingalls, the community and the shipbuilders.” Smith’s suggestion was selected from more than 400 entries submitted in the shipyard.
The branded coffee is available at DeLo’s Heavenly House of Coffee and Ingalls Logo Store as well as at a few local grocery stores, the Singing River Hospital gift shop and the Hilton Garden Inn. Both blends are available as grounds, whole beans and K-Cups. Ingalls does not profit from the sale or distribution of River 38 coffee.
