NEW CATHOLIC CHURCH
DEDICATED IN PASCAGOULA

A new Catholic church in the Diocese of Biloxi calls for a celebration and a dedication mass. It was a happy day for the pastor, Rev. Joseph Benjamin, and parishioners of St. Peter the Apostle Parish in Pascagoula when Bishop Louis F. Kihnemann III led a group of concelebrants in the recent dedication mass of their new church.
According to Father Benjamin, the parish was established in 1907 and the new facility is the fourth church. One church was destroyed by fire and two by hurricanes. The parish has 360 families.
“It was certainly exciting and I think it will be memorable for everyone who attended,” he said. “It was a beautiful ceremony and it’s a beautiful church.”
The dedication included rubbing the altar and the church walls with the Oil of Sacred Chrism and the blessing of water after it was poured into the Baptismal font. “The major item brought into the church was a relic of St. Peter the Apostle, which was deposited underneath the altar,” Father Benjamin said.
The group, Saints of St. Peter the Apostle Parish, performed a liturgical dance to the song “Something About the Name Jesus” to conclude the service.
