If you are looking for something fun and free to do with your family this summer, check out the Mississippi Coast Model Railroad Museum. The museum is located at 504 Pass Road in the city of Gulfport.
“Our Museum shares the history of those who have spent years in railroading,” said museum Development Manager Katherine Sutton. “Our club members have a passion and seriousness in their work, and love to share what they know with visitors who come to the museum. It’s like Santa’s workshop comes to life!”
With close to 200 years of railroad history, 85 running trains, four riding trains, indoor and outdoor displays, and close to two million pieces of LEGOs, the museum is sure to bring out your inner child and bring together people of all ages.
“Your kids will be mesmerized and you’ll love
to see their excitement as they watch the trains and enjoy the displays,” Sutton said. “In addition, we offer birthday parties, field trips, networking meetings and community events.”

The beautiful 1920s-era Saenger Theatre is closing for at least a year for exterior renovations. The city, owners of the theatre, announced that engineers have worked for months to get the downtown showplace ready for the $1.5 million overhaul. City, state and private funds are being used for this phase of the renovation. The next phase will include the interior.
Mayor Andrew “FoFo” Glich had his 2017 inauguration
in the theatre to draw attention to its failing state, which included plaster falling from interior walls because of water seepage through the roof and exterior walls. “I’ve made
the Saenger’s restoration and restoring two-way traffic to Howard Avenue linchpins of my administration’s efforts to revitalize downtown Biloxi,” he said.
City, state and private funds are being used for this project. Other revenue sources are being pursued to fund the next phases of the rehabilitation, which will include the interior.
The theater is a 900-seat venue that hosts numerous performing arts groups and city events. It was constructed in 1929 and opened in 1930 with the showing of Paramount’s first all-talking movie, “Interference.” The theater became a city building in 1975 and has since undergone several renovations.
No events are scheduled for the rest of this year or in all of
2019.
