SUMMER LEARNING LOSS
Enabling young people to reach their full potential has been a core part of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Gulf Coast mission for over
50 years. As part of that mission, BGCGC offers programming to combat summer learning loss at all five locations in Harrison and Hancock counties. Numerous studies show that most students lose about two months of grade- level equivalency in reading and mathematical computation skills during the summer break.
To address this need, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Gulf Coast implements a program called Summer Brain Gain. Summer Brain Gain adds engaging, educational activities to the typical summer camp experience and is for youth ages 5 to 18.
Keva Scott Ed.S., CEO explains that a strategic core value of BGCGC is fostering and encouraging academic
achievement. “Summer camp is fun and full of activities, but we also want to ensure that students do not lose any academic ground while they’re out of school,” she said.
Along with Summer Brain Gain, summer camp attendees will participate in STEAM activities, Astro Camp, intramural sports, music production, field trips and more. Boys & Girls Clubs of the Gulf Coast serves two meals
and a snack each day and is open 7:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. five days per week. The cost for the eight week camp is $255 (includes $30 field trip fee). Register online at www.bgcgulfcoast.org
