April is Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness month. On April 27, Beach View Family Dental will
host the “Mouth of the South” Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Event. We are calling the event the “mouth of the south” because we want patients, friends and colleagues to talk about this important issue. They should be screened for Oral Cancer and tell their friends to do so as well.
Oral, head and neck cancers typically refer to squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue, throat, and voice box. However, head and neck cancer also refers to other
types of cancer that arises in the nasal cavity, sinuses, lips, mouth, thyroid glands, and salivary glands. These cancers are nearly twice as common among men as they are among women.
The symptoms of head and neck cancers may include a lump or a sore that does not heal, a sore throat that does not go away, difficulty in swallowing, and a change or hoarseness in the voice. These symptoms may also be caused by other, less serious conditions. It’s important to check with a dentist or physician about any of these symptoms.
HPV related oral cancer is on the rise in younger adults without traditional risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol and is on track to overtake the rate of cervical cancer by 2020. We know that HPV positive cancer carries a better chance of survival than HPV negative if it’s caught and treated early. Call for your free screening.
