LOCAL HUNTER

oug Borries of Ocean Springs is living what many hunters would call the dream life. He’s been a professional hunting guide for 31 years, leading hunts all over the world although 75 percent of his hunts are in Texas.
“I’ve been hunting since I was a kid; I did a lot of hunting and fishing growing up,” he says. “I went on a paid trip and decided I could lead these trips.”
Working with game biologists, outfitters and ranchers, Borries taught himself. “I’ve worked with land owners to get set up over the years and know
some of the better ranchers. Texas has some of the best hunting property in the world,” he said. “My hunts are usually three days and I guarantee 100 percent
success with a no-kill-no-pay clause. I’ve never had a dissatisfied customer that I know of.” Borries has a safety-first rule and safety wise, treats everyone as though it’s their first time
to hunt. “I do most of the work myself. It’s mostly three or four men, but women are getting more into it too,” he said. “I really enjoyed having two Miami Dolphins cheerleaders on a hunt.”
A lot of kids go on the hunts and Borries says they’re sometimes better than the adults because they’re not nervous and are just on the trip to have fun.
There are management hunts that are usually for old deer that need to be taken out; trophy hunts when size of the game is a factor; and corporate and gift hunts when someone is being rewarded. The game includes white tail deer, turkey, dove, quail and hogs. “Everything can be eaten; nothing goes to waste,” Borries said. “We never know what will happen or what we’ll see,
but we’re prepared.”
Borries also has a national hunting television show, “Dynamic Outdoors,” that is aired by a
network out of Ocala, Fla., and is not available locally. “Years ago I started videoing hunts and had several hundred on film,” he said. “Mossy Oak outfitters suggested I get a better camera, which I
did, and the show developed from that.”
