SHOPPING
story by Barbara Travis
DECLUTTERING YOUR CLOSET Cleaning out provides a wonderful sense of freedom
because you’re left with all manner of things that don’t have a place in your current life and have simply become dust collectors. Donating nice clothing in good condition to thrift stores frees up space in your closet and lets others happily use and make the most of your now wrong-sized or not-needed past purchases. Someone else can give them a bright new life.
FINDING FASHION DEALS
Thrift store shopping is a fun challenge and motivating
activity. There are incredible deals to be found. People donate a myriad of items for a myriad of reasons, and it’s not at all unusual to happen upon designer clothing labels; beautiful wedding, prom, and pageant gowns; and a plethora of fashionable accessories. Visit your local Goodwill, Salvation
Army, Habitat for Humanity or other local thrift shops and be amazed at what’s waiting there to be discovered.
SUPPORTING A CAUSE
Almost all thrift store proceeds or a portion of them are
dedicated to a specific cause. Even though store prices are low, they may not be low enough for the people in need who shop there. Unsold items are often donated to families, homeless shelters, churches, and other organizations that support those who need it most. But, primarily and most importantly, the proceeds from sales at thrift stores support their organization's mission and community services like helping their clients in great need with necessities like food, rent, and utilities. Do yourself and your community a huge favor – support and shop your local thrift shops!
