The Humane Society of South Mississippi (HSSM) depends on the support of the community to shelter and care for nearly 8,000 homeless pets and provide spay/ neuter, pet identification and other services for an additional 10,000 community-owned pets each year to 7 different jurisdictions along the Gulf Coast.
This Holiday Season, HSSM
is raising donations for the Chicken Soup Fund. This fund is specifically used to care for animals that arrive at the shelter sick or injured and in need of immediate medical care and prepare them for their new forever homes. HSSM spends nearly $250,000 each year
on medical care for the pets entrusted to us. This medical fund has been lovingly dubbed the Chicken Soup Fund, because we all know that there is nothing better for the sick than a hot bowl of chicken soup.
One of HSSM’s most successful Chicken Soup cases this year
was Victor, a gentle Old English Sheepdog mix that was brought
to the shelter back in June by Harrison County Animal Control. Victor was malnourished, severely matted, had a large neck wound and was in terrible condition. HSSM’s medical team sprung into action and immediately gave him the care he desperately needed.
Although Victor had obviously lived a very rough life, he never lost his sweet and hopeful demeanor. Victor’s matts were

removed, his wound was treated and he spent two and a half months recovering and being showered with love at the shelter until he was finally ready to
be adopted at HSSM’s Rock ‘N Roll Over event in September. There, he hit the jackpot and was adopted into a loving family and we couldn’t be happier for him.
Victor was able to receive the lifesaving treatment he needed all thanks to generous donations made to the Chicken Soup Fund. This holiday season, please consider donating to HSSM so we can continue providing high quality, lifesaving services to the most vulnerable pets along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Thanks for all your support in making shelter spirits bright!
