COASTNOTES
MONEY RAISED
for breast cancer awareness
More than 7,500 Gulf Coast residents came together on Biloxi Town Green for the American Cancer Society’s 11th Annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk and raised
$200,000 to help create a world free from the pain and suffering caused by breast cancer.
“The event was a
moving example of passion in action,” said Liz Gaulke, American Cancer Society community manager. “Our Making Strides walk ensures no one faces breast cancer alone by bringing the community together, funding innovative breast cancer research, promoting education and risk reduction and providing comprehensive patient support to those who need it most.”
Kim Goetz, director of marketing at IP Casino, Resort and Spa, served as the Survivor Speaker and Grand Marshal. Oncologist Raetasha Dabney, M.D., was the Guest Speaker and Tony Eckwood, Fitness Instructor at Keesler Air Force
Base, led the participants in a spirited warm up before the walk. Rhonda Weider of WLOX-TV, Kelly Bennett and Walter Brown from I Heart Media/Magic
93.7 Radio were emcees for the event.
Since 1993, more than 12 million Making Strides supporters have raised more than $750 million
nationwide.
The 2016 Making Strides Against
Breast Cancer committee is comprised of volunteer members Event Chair Denise Landry, Jeff Green, Mishelle Morris- Montgomery, Sabreana Sipp, Gene McKay, Kathie Ladner, Katherine Evans, Dana Ladner, Danielle Litsey, Sheila White, Star Ransonet and Liz Gaulke.
While significant progress in the fight against breast cancer has been made, more needs to be done. Excluding cancers of the skin, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women and is the second-leading cause of cancer death in women.
