The United Way for Jackson & George Counties is busy improving the lives of men, women and children in the two counties. Through the work of their 19 member agencies and collaborations with local businesses and programs, the United Way addresses the critical needs in the community. They also provide the support and resources needed to solve these issues while creating a better community for all.
CEO Carolyn Moore said, “The United Way is the catalyst that pulls people together for solutions to the communities’ problems. We’re excited and grateful for the support we have because the sum is greater than the individual parts.”
Some of the programs of the United Way include the Community Resource Center in their office, and partnerships with the American Red Cross-Southeast Chapter, Health & Handicapped Services, and the Home of Grace. “We have great partnerships with the community,” Moore said, “and we have a strategic plan that’s looking at additional partnerships.”
A mental health coalition has been formed to work with Gulf Coast Family Counseling for a teaching compassion program to children
in Boys and Girls Clubs that addresses such issues as bullying. The partnership with the Literacy Council is teaching English as a second language. “I’m optimistic about the new year that more partnerships can be formed,” Moore said.
Moore, who came on board in 2007, says the annual campaign is progressing well toward the yearly goal. Pledges will be taken through December 31.
