LETTER from the editor
Happy Holidays as we roll into the busy month of December. There is no shortage of things to do to celebrate the season and bring another year to a close.
We have the scoop in this month’s magazine if you’re looking for family entertainment. There are the reliable traditions of lighted boat parades, productions of “The Nutcracker” ballet, and numerous festivities at the Beau Rivage Casino Resort. Something new this year is the Harbor Lights Winter Festival in
Gulfport’s Jones Park. It’s sure to be a crowd pleaser.
The Holy Trinity
Greek Orthodox
Church has some
old and some new
this year with their
cultural festival
and bake sale by
adding several
more countries to
the mix. A box of
their wonderful
pastry treats
appears in our
office kitchen every
year so we look forward to the addition of new treats.
There’s a great story in the Art section about the enormous mural that local marine artist Marty Wilson painted on the Highway 90 side of The Reef restaurant in Biloxi. It’s a labor of love that’s sure to be appreciated by everyone driving along the highway.
In Sports & Outdoor, we feature a piece about Danny Walton. Amazingly, he’s participated in 16 Ironman competitions, the most recent being the world championship in Hawaii. Congratulations, Danny.
Please do not miss a special story in the Living History section. Readers
of a certain age are sure to remember Look magazine. Before the internet, Facebook and hundreds of television channels, Look (and its competitor magazine Life) kept people informed and entertained every two weeks. Fifty years ago, Look ran a piece about the Changing South with several pages devoted to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, or the Unsung Riviera as the magazine called it. Several of the teenagers pictured in the spread recall those days and posed for ‘now photos’ for us.
Now for the real meat of this edition of SML, the Giving Guide. For the second year, thanks to generous sponsors, we present a long list of charitable organizations with addresses, websites, phone numbers and contact names. That makes it easy to make contributions and/or donate time as a volunteer. There are also feature stories about numerous organizations that were chosen for spotlighting by the sponsors.

I just picked up a copy of the November issue and am delighted, both with the story and with
the photos. Please convey my appreciation to Katherine for the great photography. Thank you for such a great presentation.
