“I wanted medical research to support or disprove the option of weight loss surgery, and Dr. Avara at South Mississippi Surgical Weight Loss was excited
to share research studies with me and discuss how genetics affects obesity. This impressed me as a nurse, as did the reputations of Doctors Avara and Payne within the community.”
After getting to know the South Mississippi Surgical Weight Loss staff, Shows was assured of her decision and glad to have a clinic that used a team approach on her side. With their guidance, she chose the vertical sleeve gastrectomy due to the shortened recovery time. Along with the surgery, Shows received nutritional sessions with Abby Sniffen that helped her to adjust her diet and adopt postoperative eating patterns. Almost two years later, she has lost 77 pounds and is off the medications she originally had to take to keep up her health.
“I felt great after just five days, am off those five prescriptions, walk five miles a day five times a week, eat protein five times a day, and wish I had made this decision five years earlier,” Shows said.
