oe Gill of Ocean Springs was honored with the 2017 Lyles-Simpson Award by the Gulf States Marine Fisheries Commission. This prestigious award is presented annually
to an individual, agency or organization
for contributions to the betterment of the fisheries of the Gulf of Mexico through significant biological, industrial, legislative, enforcement or administrative activities.
Gill has more than 44 years of fisheries involvement and is currently CEO of Joe Gill Consulting, LLC. His career has included work with the Mississippi Bureau of Marine Resources and Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks in various capacities, including chief of wetlands division, deputy director of Coastal Operations and executive director. Additionally,
he has served on the Gulf States Marine Fisheries Commission 22 years — several times as chairman — and on the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council.
State Representative Hank Zuber introduced
a resolution, which was passed by the House of Representatives and State Senate, commending Gill on this achievement. The resolution reads in part, “He (Gill) made great strides for the good of the fisheries of the Gulf of Mexico, and for his efforts to improve the Mississippi Gulf Coast and its surrounding waters, we recognize and commend him on his accomplishments.”

he Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra’s recently completed Adopt-A-Musician fundraiser was an outstanding success this year. It’s the fifth year for this program,
but the first year the Symphony Guild has conducted it. The effort ran for three months,
raising $14,700 compared to $3,800 last year.
“All musicians contracted for this season’s concerts
were adopted,” fundraiser chairman Cheryl Hall said. “The music director,
personnel manager and 53 other musicians were adopted this year. “
Interested individuals donate to ‘adopt’ a member of the orchestra. The number of musicians varies each year depending on the number needed for the classical program selected and instruments required. Musicians audition each
year for a contractual position with the orchestra. Symphony Guild Co-President Melanie Landrum
presented a check to Symphony Board President Shelia White at the season’s opening concert. “We are very pleased that all musicians were adopted and to present this check to the Symphony for the continuation of this musical treasure for our community,” Landrum said.
The next Symphony concert is Holiday Peppermint Pops on November 26, 3 p.m., at the Biloxi Saenger Theatre.
