Hancock Holding Company thanks volunteers at stock market opening
story by Lynn Lofton
Minutes before Hancock Holding Company executives opened The NASDAQ Stock Market
to observe the 10th anniversary of Hurricane
Katrina, President and CEO John M. Hairston
offered impassioned
thanks to countless people helping the Gulf Coast recover. When he finished,
people in NASDAQ’s New York studio and across America knew for sure the coastal Gulf South has grown stronger, better, and brighter since Katrina struck with full-force fury.
“As we observe the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and our company’s 25th year on NASDAQ, Hancock Holding Company honors the people who showed that
the values we share as Americans are brightest on the darkest days,” Hairston said. “The Gulf Coast has rebuilt a robust, diverse regional economy that brings thousands of people and businesses to the area and billions of dollars to America’s economy each year.”
In conjunction with the NASDAQ ceremony, Hancock Holding Company launched a new, interactive dedicated website — www.hancockwhitney.com — spotlighting caring, commerce, and opportunity across Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama areas devastated by Katrina.
On August 29, 2006, Hancock opened Nasdaq to mark the first anniversary of Katrina and the beginning of the regional recovery.

When it comes to insurance, the Bishop family covers a lot of bases across the Coast. James Bishop and partner Scott Mosher own Bishop Insurance in Biloxi; James’ mother Linda Bishop owns Bishop Insurance Brokers in Bay St. Louis; and his sister Amy Bishop Coakley has Bishop Insurance Services in Pascagoula.
“We serve the whole Coast and know a lot of people,” James Bishop said. “I believe we have a good reputation, and we work hard to keep a high level of trust and confidence.”
With the evolving coastal insurance scene, Bishop Insurance is growing and recently moved to a larger facility in Biloxi. The agency writes polices for home; rental dwelling; auto; recreational; flood; commercial; stand-alone liabilities; umbrella policies; events such as parades; and even has special jewelry coverage. They’re also writing homeowner polices with wind coverage in some areas south of Interstate 10.
“We’re pleased to be able to serve the community in this way,” Bishop said. “As an independent agency we work with several companies to provide the best rates and offer great customer service.”
