As the son of a son of a sailor, Jimmy Buffett never forgot which sands were home. When he could sneak away to the Coast, Buffett visited all his favorite places, including Scranton’s in Pascagoula.

as Anola fell in love with Altama, the chief of the Pascagoula tribe. She was betrothed to
a chieftain in her own tribe, but she fled with Altama to live with his people. This led to a war between the two tribes, and the Pascagoula Indians swore to either save the young couple or perish with them. Rather than facing enslavement or death by the Biloxi tribe, the Pascagoula tribe members joined hands and began to chant a song of death as they walked into the river. Many believe the tender sounds still heard today are that same death song.

    Pascagoula is designated as an American World War II Heritage City by the National Park Service. There can only be one Heritage City in each state. Currently, Pascagoula is one of 38 communities in the country that have received this distinction.
