 CASINO CORNER
A personal view of casinos by Lori Beth Susman
It’s standard practice that casinos are for adults, those 21 and older. At some casinos, those younger than 21 are allowed to stay in the hotel and use the pool, dine in the restaurants and visit shopping areas and arcades. Parents and guardians are just asked to keep a close eye on their children, and when walking to a restaurant, go around the outer edge of the casino whenever possible instead of straight through the middle. However, not all casino resorts welcome children, and starting July 1, SILVER SLIPPER CASINO HOTEL becomes the third Gulf Coast resort with an adults-only policy. Silver Slipper noticed too many children and teenagers were not being properly supervised and that caused some trouble. They took action and now only those 21 and older can stay at the hotel, dine in the restaurants and visit the casino. And many people think that is the way it should be.
TREASURE BAY in Biloxi and THE VIEW CASINO RESORTS in Gulfport have been adults only for a couple of years now, and the feedback they’ve received has generally been positive. We’re not sure if this trend will carry over to other casinos in Mississippi, but it does make sense for those properties without amenities for children to not allow them.
Feeling stressed out these days? GOLDEN NUGGET Biloxi has reopened its Spa & Salon where guests can get relaxing massages, rejuvenating facials and more. Plus, unwind in the sauna, whirlpool or steam room. The entire spa is designed to indulge the senses. And, on Thursdays and Fridays, Harrison, Hancock and Jackson county residents will receive 25% off services with the Love for Locals special.
PALACE CASINO RESORT, the only smoke-free casino in the state, has a special everyone can enjoy. Get a half-price lunch or dinner buffet Monday through Thursday just by earning points through casino play. Earn 10 points, get a half-price lunch buffet. Earn 20 points for a half-price dinner buffet. The lunch buffet voucher needs to be printed at the kiosk from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and the dinner buffet voucher needs to be printed between 3 and 8 p.m. The vouchers are only good on the date issued (not valid on July 4).
Now, it is no secret that some restaurants automatically add a tip when there’s a party of eight or more. But in recent news it’s been suggested that some Las Vegas casino restaurants are going to automatically add the tip to the bill no matter how many people are dining. That way the server gets a guaranteed amount, with the diner having the option to add more if they desire. People are divided as to whether or not this is a good idea.
But one thing we can all agree upon, it is important to give your server a good tip. While it is commonplace for restaurants — like just about everywhere — to be short staffed, those servers who do show up and work hard deserve to be tipped — maybe even generously so. Even if the service takes a little longer, the restaurant is out of a favorite dish or there is some other inconvenience, don’t take it out on the person who is trying their best to make sure you have a pleasant dining experience. Also remember, a kind word and some patience go a long way these days.
