Oscar Wilde is quoted as saying, “Conversation about the weather is the last refuge of the unimaginative.” Well, with all due respect to Mr. Wilde, let’s talk about the weather. Boy, has it been cold in South Mississippi. Those of you from other areas have also felt the chill. In some areas, the snow is still coming down. But now that it is March, we are hoping for more sunny days and warmer weather to prevail. In fact, we will soon get more sunlight by design when Daylight Saving Time begins March 10 and we “spring” the clocks forward an hour.
All this is to let you know — it is practically pool season. Several casinos are taking the first step and opening their outdoor restaurants. At TREASURE BAY in Biloxi, Agua opens March 15. The pool bar and grill is known for its cool cocktails along with starters, sandwiches, burgers, pizzas and wraps all made fresh to order. Agua is located on the upper level of the pool deck and will be open Fridays through Sunday, with extended hours starting in May.
And SILVER SLIPPER CASINO HOTEL will open its Beach Bar and Smokehouse Cafe starting March 14. Both will be open every Thursday at 4 p.m. (weather permitting). Just think: It’s going to be summer before we know it.
This year is filled with some big anniversaries — including ours. Jackpot! is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2024 (you’ll hear more about that over the next few months). Two casinos are having anniversary events in March. AMERISTAR CASINO HOTEL in Vicksburg is celebrating 30 years with a $30,000 giveaway on March 1-2. BEAU RIVAGE is marking its 25th anniversary in the middle of the month. On March 16, there will be a $250,000 giveaway and an outdoor drone show that will be choreographed to music. You can read about all the exciting anniversary happenings in this issue.
I’ve had a few questions recently about some of our winner photos; you know, when a player hits a jackpot and gets their photo taken with a big check or a lot of cash. Each casino has a different process for their winner photos, and that could be why you don’t always see photos from every casino. It doesn’t mean no one wins at that casino; it is just that getting a photo of the winner to us is not a priority.
The second part to this is while a lot of people are happy to pose with the big check and have their name in magazines, including Jackpot!, not everyone who wins a large sum of cash wants their photo taken and their name released. But, the win should still be announced. That is why you see photos of slot machines with winning combinations although no people. Seeing symbols line up or the message that says, “Call Attendant” is pretty exciting. We like to feature happy, surprised people after their win, but we’ll take the next best thing, as well. Who knows — one of these anonymous winners may even be you.
Finally, kudos to WATERVIEW CASINO HOTEL for its Community Give Back Sundays for EMTs, firefights and police officers. Each week, these first responders in Vicksburg and surrounding areas are treated to a free meal in the Sandbar Cafe. That’s a wonderful gift for the people in the jobs we value so much.
